SUNDERLAND reporter Chris Young gives his verdict after the 10-man Black Cats succumbed to a 2-0 defeat at Manchester United.
Pantilimon 6 - Had a handful of routine saves to make, yet perhaps should have done better in holding Januzaj’s shot for United’s second.
Reveillere 6 - Troubled by Young during the first half, who looked to be the only United player with an idea of how to unlock Sunderland’s defence.
O’Shea 6 - Should have been sent off for bringing down Falcao and had a lucky escape in the first half when he sent Young’s effort onto his own crossbar.
Brown 7 - Wrongly dismissed when he barely made contact with Falcao. Had completely dominated the United striker up to that point.
Van Aanholt 7 - Excellent first half in containing an awful Di Maria, but had more troubles after the break following the introduction of Januzaj.
CATTERMOLE 7 - Walked a tight-rope at times in avoiding a 10th booking of the campaign, but frustrated United’s attempts to create a midfield platform for more than an hour.
Larsson 6 - Broke up United’s play well, but got sucked into sitting too deep after the opening 20 minutes, albeit he produced a smart goal-line clearance.
Gomez 6 - Looked lively early on, yet became increasingly anonymous as the encounter wore on.
Johnson 6 - Produced one eye-catching first half run which should have earned him a free-kick on the edge of the box, but managed little else. (Fletcher 6 - Game had gone by the time he was introduced).
Wickham 7 - Powerful driving run which saw De Gea make a smart save early on. Didn’t neglect his defensive duties in wide left role. (Graham 6 - Starved of service and did nothing to threaten an unlikely comeback).
Defoe 6 - Sent a couple of harmless shots high or wide in the first half, but left too isolated after the opening exchanges. (Vergini 6 - Made a couple of timely interceptions after Brown’s dismissal.)
MAN UNITED: De Gea 7, Smalling 5, Rojo 6, Evans 6, Valencia 7, Blind 6, Herrera 7, Young 8, Di Maria 5 (Januzaj 8), Rooney 7, Falcao 6 (Fellaini 6).
