Sunderland keeper Jordan Pickford enjoyed an excellent England Under-21s debut tonight – enjoying a 60-minute shut-out before being substituted.
Pickford, who has made a big impression on loan at Preston in the Championship this season, revelled in the surroundings at Deepdale to defy the United States’ Under-23s as England edged a 1-0 friendly success.
The Under-21 call continues Pickford’s rise through the England international ranks, having been capped at U16, U17, U18, U19 and U20 levels.
Manchester United striker James Wilson grabbed the only goal, netting from close range in the 72nd minute.
“Given the short period of time the players have had with us they really took ideas on quickly,” Under-21 boss Gareth Southgate said after giving 11 players their debuts from a rebuilt squad after last summer’s disappointment at the tournament in the Czech Republic.
