Phil Parkinson’s side brushed aside the Dale as they claimed what could prove to be a vital three points in the promotion race.
And while there were standout performances across the board, who really shone on Wearside? Scroll down and click through the pages to see how Phil Smith rated the displays on show against Rochdale:
1. Jon McLaughlin
A bystander for the most part, but alert in the brief moments where he was required. Yet another clean sheet for the Scot. 6 Photo: FRANK REID
2. Jordan Willis
Not the most testing of nights defensively but yet again he was supreme in his composure and athleticism. Enjoyed the opportunity to break forward regularly. 7 Photo: Frank Reid
3. Tom Flanagan
Gave the ball away on one or two occasions but generally speaking he brought it out well and defensively he was excellent, making one key challenge on Henderson shortly before Sunderland scored their third. 7 Photo: COPYRIGHT (C) FRANK REID 20187
4. Bailey Wright
Timed one challenge superbly in the first half in one of Rochdale’s rare forays forward, nicking the ball from Ian Henderson just as he tried to break into the box. Looked very comfortable throughout. 7 Photo: Frank Reid
