Goals from Jordan Jones and Grant Leadbitter weren’t quite enough for the Black Cats, who led twice during the contest.
But who were the star performers, and who has work to do?
Our chief football writer Phil Smith has dished out his marks from the match – scroll down and flick through the pages of our picture gallery to see how each player fared:
1. Lee Burge
Made some smart stops but beaten easily from close range as Wilks delivered dangerous crosses into the box. 6 Photo: FRANK REID 2020
2. Max Power
Not beaten too often down his flank and wasn’t until later in the contest that Keane Lewis-Potter began to threaten. Joined in with the attacking play well in the first half. 6 Photo: FRANK REID 2020
3. Luke O'Nien
Typically tenacious in his duel with the Hull front line and made some good interceptions at dangerous times. A bit inconsistent in his distribution but there were one or two good switches. 5 Photo: FRANK REID 2020
4. Bailey Wright
Doesn’t look anywhere near his sharpest after a long recent lay-off, and the amount of football other injuries are forcing him to play looks to be having an impact. Gave it away in dangerous areas and was beaten in the air for the second goal. 4 Photo: FRANK REID 2019
