How Sunderland's players rated at Southend United

A Chris Maguire penalty wasn't enough for the Wearsiders, who put in a drab performance at Roots Hall as their regular league season ended. And our Sunderland AFC writer Phil Smith has handed out his player ratings, with some unsurprisingly low marks. Scroll down and click through the pages to see who shone - and struggled - for the Black Cats at Southend:

Made an excellent block early on to deny Dru Yearwood but it was another game in which all he could do was pick the ball out the net. Let down by the defending in front of him again. 6
90 minutes could be valuable ahead of the play-offs but he made little impression on the game, noticeably fading towards the end of the game. 5

Beaten too easily for the Southend goal as a corner dropped into a dangerous area. An opportunity missed to stake his claim for the play-off campaign. 4
Sunderlands best defender in the main, winning most of his aerial duels. Errors across the backline continue to blight Jack Ross and his side, though. 6
Played one exceptional pass to Adam Matthews but otherwise his use of the ball was very poor. More soft defending cost the Black Cats clear. 4
Came close to scoring a fine long-range effort in the second half but couldnt control the tempo as he does at his best. 5
Couldnt get hold of it enough in midfield in either half. Difficult afternoon and replaced with just over 20 minutes to go. 5
Should have had his first assist of the year when Chris Maguire missed following a fine through ball. Wasted a couple of other good opportunities in the first half. 5
Showed some good touches and scored a good penalty but drifted out of the game too often. Looking sharper ahead of the Portsmouth games, at least. 6
Won a penalty and should have had another, though struggled to get into the game for the most part. His partnership with Grigg again produced few openings for the Black Cats. 5
Looked well off the pace again, taking a heavy touch in one particularly promising counter. Struggled to make any impression on the game. 4
Faded late on but at least brought some intensity to the Black Cats forward line and made things happen. Important in getting his side level initially. 7
Brought some pace and drive from the right. Always a threat. 6
Looked short of his best level after a spell on the sidelines. 5
