Benji Kimpioka struck late at the Stadium of Light to salvage a point against Coventry City on Saturday following another poor display from the Black Cats.

Reflecting on the lack of quality in the final third, Parkinson said: “I thought some of the delivery into the box was decent, the desire to get into the six-yard box – when the ball is flashed across – who is going to get on the end of it?

“We need the players in the right areas when those balls are coming in.

“It comes in and at times it is just Will Grigg in there, the wide players are waiting on the edge of the box for it to come back out again. It was wet day, great day for delivering early.

“We didn’t have enough bodies in there until the end, when we got four or five bodies in there.

“It broke to young Benji and he put it away well.”

Sunderland went in behind at the break but they produced a flat start to the second half, Parkinson said: “First half, in patches we did alright, second half we looked flat for ten to 15 minutes. It took the changes to give us a lift.”

Asked if the draw with Coventry had heaped more pressure on Tuesday evening, Parkinson added: “Anytime we play at home there is pressure on, not just us, any team playing at home.”
