Duncan Watmore made a successful first team return during the Checkatrade Trophy victory over Notts County - and fans were delighted to see him return.

The speedy forward completed 67 minutes during the 2-0 triumph at the Stadium of Light and looked lively through - playing a key part in the own goal which opened the scoring.

Jerome Sinclair's second half penalty then completed the victory and secured progression to the last sixteen, meaning Wembley is just three games away.

But fans were focused on Watmore's display post-match and took to social media to air their thoughts on his performance.

Here's the best of the reaction from Twitter:

@Jam_Sarny said: "God I've missed Watmore. Our little roadrunner."

@ALS_Fanzine added: "Watmore looking good tonight. Doesn't seem to be showing any sluggishness or doubt in his play. Very promising for #SAFC!"

@DavidZavac, however, wasn't as pleased: "I can already tell Sunderland is going to use Duncan Watmore's sudden health/emergence as justification for selling Josh Maja and it's a real bummer because they could play together."

But @peterjames73 tweeted: "Professional display tonight and deservedly in the next round. Great to see Watmore back and he was very good on his return. Kimpioka excellent when he came on. Solid display from Bainbridge again as well. One step closer to Wembley"

@SuperKevFTM posted: "Sinclair the big negative tonight, Mumba grew into the game. Watmore looks good Kimpioka looks frightening."

@SAFCSource commented: "Comfortable enough win without really needing to get out of first gear. Brilliant to see Watmore back, thought Bainbridge looked solid and Kimpioka looks such a threat. Great first half save by Ruiter as well."

@LWOS_SAFC said: "Into the last 16, Unbeaten run continues, Watmore returns to first team, Decent nights work"

@Waldron1994 added: "In the the last 16 of the @CheckatradeTrpy. Unbeaten in 15 games in all competitions. Carlsberg don’t do Tuesday nights....."

@pumayo posted: "much better attacking football in second half. good return for dunc. kimpioka looked good too. job done!"

@jake_hannah tweeted: "Bali Mumba running the show in that second half out of position at 17 years old, give the lad a lifetime contract pls"

@Gaz_Bellamy commented: "The wizards go marching on. Good to see Duncan Watmore get more minutes in the legs. Look forward to being drawn against THEM down the road on Saturday.
