MARTIN O’Neill claims that, with almost half of the January transfer window gone, he has yet to turn his mind to signing new players.

In what is surely an effort to keep the focus on the team’s improved form since arriving as manager, the Black Cats’ boss says he will probably consider his options after this weekend’s game at Chelsea.

He said: “I genuinely haven’t had that much time to think about it.

“Of course, it crosses your mind, but to sit down and start going through things, I haven’t had the chance to do that.

“I will do, obviously, next week.”

Midfielder Craig Gardner will be at O’Neill’s disposal at Stamford Bridge with his manager desperate to hang on to him amid speculation that homesickness could force him back to the midlands.

He said: “Obviously, we would like him to stay, but we will see what develops and at this minute, nothing has developed.”
