Lee Johnson’s side came from behind after Lincoln’s Anthony Scully opened the scoring but drew level through Charlie Wyke 15 minutes from time.

Sunderland did it the hard way after losing defender Bailey Wright to injury at half-time, but came through the tie when Grant Leadbitter converted the winning spot kick.

Here’s how some fans reacted:

@GarethDuff: @SunderlandAFC fans haven’t seen their team win at Wembley since 1973. They’ve had 7 attempts in that time. There’d be nothing more Sunderland than winning this time, with no fans allowed

@chrissavedlatin: Notable mention, I thought Chris Maguire was terrific when he came on tonight

@GarethBarkerWMS: We won that with no centre backs and only one central midfielder playing in his correct position. Funny

@Chippy19772: I am buzzing we have got to Wembley and for the players this is probably the last season for 90 per cent of the players. If the takeover does go through the lads have not been good enough to take us up but to finish they safc career hopefully with a medal

@WeAreWearside: New manager. New structure. Some wins! Geads. Takeover. Wembley. Charlie Wyke memes everywhere. It’s fantastic to finally feel good about this club again.

@donjuan72FTM: Now announce the takeover

@EllisJw12: May have had one to many but is a pizza slice tattoo to much if we win it
