GUS POYET has played down any fears over Ricky Alvarez’s absence from Sunderland’s goalless draw at Leicester.

On-loan Inter Milan midfielder Alvarez was expected to be in the Sunderland squad for the trip to the King Power Stadium after returning to training this week following two months on the sidelines with a knee problem.

But while fellow South American Sebastian Coates was back on the bench after injury, there was no place for Alvarez, with academy product Tom Robson again taking a place among the substitutes.

However, Sunderland boss Poyet says Alvarez had simply felt the affects of being worked hard in his recovery and is due to be back in training on Monday.

“After three or four days of training a lot, we decided to give him a rest,” said Poyet.

“He’ll be back training on Monday.”

Billy Jones and Emanuele Giaccherini are also expected back in full training next week after their own respective injury lay-offs.
