From youngsters to first-team players keen to stake a claim, the game will give Parkinson the chance to cast his eye over a large number of his squad ahead of the League One opener on September.
We take a look at those who look set for an opportunity against Villa’s second string:
1. Remi Matthews
The summer signing’s debut performance against Carlisle United was mixed to say the least, but Matthews is likely to be given another chance to impress against Villa. With Lee Burge in fine form, it’s a chance for Matthews to stake his claim before the League One opener against Bristol Rovers. Photo: Ian Horrocks
2. Morgan Feeney
We haven’t seen a great deal of Feeney since his arrival this summer, so the visit of Villa’s youngsters will be an interesting indication as to how ready he is for first-team football on Wearside. Photo: Frank Reid
3. Brandon Taylor
Taylor caught the eye of Parkinson with a strong performance against Gillingham in the FA Cup last year, and could be in-line for another chance to impress in the EFL Trophy. Club staff have high hopes for Taylor - and he could find himself more involved with the first-team this season. Photo: FRANK REID 2019
4. Jack Diamond
Arguably unlucky not to be included on the bench for the visit of Hull City, Diamond has impressed in pre-season and will look to show what he could bring to this Sunderland side against Villa. Photo: Frank Reid
