1. SUNDERLAND 3-0 WEST BROM (1999)
As Peter Reid’s side strolled towards the Division One title, this was a big result in their quest for promotion. A Kevin Phillips brace either side of Lee Clark’s strike put Sunderland on the path towards a Premier League return. Photo: Shaun Botterill
2. DERBY COUNTY 1-4 SUNDERLAND (2016)
This resounding win in the Midlands ultimately proved a dose of false hope, but it was Chris Coleman’s finest hour during his brief spell at Sunderland. Goals from George Honeyman, Ashley Fletcher, Aiden McGeady and John O’Shea saw Sunderland move off the foot of the Championship table. Photo: Nathan Stirk
3. MANCHESTER UNITED 0-0 SUNDERLAND (2006)
Okay, so this isn’t a win - but drawing away at Old Trafford is no mean feat - especially for a Sunderland side were all-but relegated from the Premier League before kick-off. Relishing the lack of pressure, the Black Cats kept the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs and Ruud Van Nistelrooy at bay - deservedly taking a point back to Wearside. 4. SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY 0-2 SUNDERLAND (2000)
Another dose of magic from Kevin Phillips over the Easter Weekend at Hillsborough. Sunderland lived precariously for 86 minutes, soaking up pressure from their hosts as the Owls squandered countless chances. Then in stepped Phillips, who netted twice in the final four minutes to claim the three points for the Black Cats. Photo: Michael Steele
