TITUS Bramble and Michael Turner were given a run-out yesterday in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Newcastle United at the Academy of Light.

The duo successfully got through a game which Sunderland won 4-3, though the game was made difficult by the windy conditions.

The Black Cats side weathered a flying start from the Tynesiders who took an early lead, to come back strongly and win the game.

But Steve Bruce will have been less interested in the result than he was that his two big defenders got another game under their belts and took further steps towards full fitness.

Bramble is expected to come into Sunderland’s first team this weekend as a straight swap for Anton Ferdinand, who moved to Queens Park Rangers on transfer deadline day last week in a £3m deal. Turner’s return to availability is still some time off.
