This year’s meeting is set to take on extra significance given the current state of the game, and decisions made today could shape the way football bounces back from the coronavirus crisis.

Clubs in League One and League Two are pushing the EFL to announce a start date for the 2020/21 season – which will enable them to map out their next steps ahead of football’s return.

According to Peterborough United’s director of football Barry Fry, there have been two potential restart dates already touted: August 22 and September 12.

But clubs are hopeful of some more clarity following today’s meeting, during which a provisional date for the opening weekend of the 2020/21 season will be discussed.

Salary Caps

League One clubs are braced for new financial regulations to be introduced ahead of the 2020/21 season, with a flat salary cap widely expected to be introduced.

Financial controls will be high on the agenda at today’s meeting and will need approving quickly, particularly given that clubs are already beginning to shape their squads for the 2020/21 season.

It’s worth noting, especially in Sunderland’s case, that clubs are expected to be given a year’s grace period to comply with any newly-introduced financial controls – giving sides an additional twelve months to bring down their player expenditure to beneath the EFL-set threshold.

A Conclusion To The EFL’s Governance Review

In the aftermath of the sad demise of Bury, the EFL setting about reviewing the measures it has in place to support clubs from a financial and governance perspective.

A number of recommendations and proposals made off the back of this review are expected to be put forward today.

These could include the aforementioned salary caps and tweaks to the EFL’s regulations.

Rick Parry’s Future

EFL chairman Rick Parry will be up for re-election today – with his initial term as EFL chairman having expired. It is expected that he will continue in his role moving forward.
