Bailey Wright’s well-taken effort saw the Black Cats earn a point after Joe Pigott’s first-half penalty, meaning Sunderland haven’t won at the Stadium of Light in over a month.

It was another game in which Sunderland failed to carve out many meaningful opportunities despite dominating possession – and some fans were keen to see improvements.

But others were more sympathetic after the Black Cats were forced to make do without eight players because of a COVID-19 outbreak at the Academy of Light.

Here’s what fans were saying on social media:

@Camer0nJohnson said: “A backwards performance and another step-back. Never change Sunderland”

@Matty0802 added: “We love a 1-1 draw”

@RamseySAFC commented: “With the team we put out it's probably a decent point all things considering. Thought there were a few positives most notable, Dion Sanderson thought he was superb all game.”

@samsonplace tweeted: “Poor performance but given the covid outbreak a point may be crucial in the end”

@TheoCT98 posted: “Given the circumstances a points decent could have maybe went for it a little more but oh well”

@Philip_RJ89 added: “Hmmm. A decent point, or a missed opportunity? That’s a curious result. Mitigating circumstances with the COVID issue, but we did look jaded at times. Not a game to remember for the right reasons”

@CLQ_W1LKS said: “Poor game, but what can you do with a weak sqaud against a side who didn't want to play football. From 1-0 down I'd take a point. But need to move the ball quicker!”

@neil_graney tweeted: “#SAFC still with an undercurrent of #parkyball - far too often we go sidewards or backwards, meaning attacking impetus is lost, too easy to defend against”

@kevsafc22 posted: “Under the circumstances, I don't think tactics or individual performances should be in question tonight”

@NathanJ_C1 commented: “All things considered, that’s not the worst result. A heavily depleted squad and plenty of endeavour to go and get something after going one down. McFadzean had a bit of a shocker and we missed someone like McGeady or Maguire pulling something special out.”
