The Dons came from behind to win 2-1 at the Stadium of Light, after Max Power’s opener beat Fisher in the visitors’ goal.

"It's one of those, I don't know who it came off but I had the save before the defection,” said Fisher when discussing the goal. “It happens, but it was a good reaction from the lads to go and get the goal and win in the end."

A Cameron Jerome equaliser and Scott Fraser penalty gave the visitors all three points, while Fisher made an excellent save to keep out another deflected shot in the second half.

"It was another deflected one! It was just pure reflexes,” he added. I stuck my leg out and it got my big toe. At the end of the game, it's nice to have made a few saves but we don't want shots on target.

"It's a massive win, we were excellent throughout, defended well in the second half and overall we deserved the win.”

Pundit delivers verdict on penalty

Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson didn’t gloss over his side’s ‘unacceptable’ defending following Saturday’s defeat, yet Newport manager Michael Flynn felt the Black Cats were unfortunate to concede a penalty.

With the score at 1-1, Power was penalised for bringing down Fraser inside the area, before the latter converted from the spot.

When appearing as a pundit on the EFL’s highlights show on Quest, Flynn said: “I think it’s a real cheap penalty, I’m not sure what Power’s supposed to do there, he’s swung he’s tried to clear the ball and he’s on the blind side of the collison"

Break has done us good says Doncaster defender

Next up for Sunderland is a trip to Doncaster on Saturday.

Rovers didn’t have a match over the weekend due to international fixtures, and defender Andy Butler believes that will benefit his side.

“The travelling we’ve done, Plymouth, Portsmouth, it really does take it out of you when you’re on a bus for seven hours,” said Butler.

“It’ll probably do them good, a rest and a break from football.”
