SIMON Mignolet was the notable absentee not just from Sunderland’s starting line-up today but from their squad.

He was one of three players not included in the squad to face Groningen - presumably because of injury - with David Vaughan and Blair Adams also absent for today’s Peace Cup consolation game.

The heat and humidity in the Suwon Stadium was oppressive this afternoon, far greater than it had been on Thursday evening.

But the few dozen Sunderland fans in the ground were not fazed by the conditions, punching well above their way thanks to a megaphone and going through numerous chants, including ‘One Barry Siddall’.

Sunderland were captained once again by Lee Cattermole with youngsters Ben Wilson, in goal, and Craig Lynch, on the wing, given their chance.

As predicted in the Echo, Carlos Cuellar was given his full debut.

Sunderland: Wilson, Gardner, Brown, Cuellar, Colback Lynch, Cattermole, Meyler, Richardson, Campbell, Wickham. Subs: Pickford, Egan, Turner, Bramble, Laing, Knott, Reed, Deacon, Noble.
