Sunderland lost the Wear-Tees derby today against Middlesbrough - and fans were quick to pass their judgement on Twitter.

The Black Cats crashed to two brilliant Christian Stuani first-half strikes, although a spirited second-half performance saw Patrick van Aanholt claw a goal back.

Ultimately though, a severely depleted Sunderland side lacked that extra bit of nous and ability to get a point.

And supporters took to social media to express their feelings, with some urging their fellow fans to keep the faith, while others want Ellis Short to splash the cash and bolster the squad before the transfer window closes.

Here's a selection of the comments.

@ALS_Fanzine: 2 Boro attacks undid us. We were clueless at times, but some of our players left it all on the pitch, played their hearts out

@mickygray33: Badly need at least 5 players to give us any chance this season #Safc

@NeilJones34: If Ellis short doesn't put his hand in his pocket now he never will! #SAFC

@benjidavis86: After today surely that is a sign to Moyes and Short that more players are needed, 5 first choice players are needed in my opinion #safc

@MaxHanaghan: Really, honestly struggling to articulate my emotions towards @SunderlandAFC at moment, after yrs of failing to learn same lessons

@LBarks72: Absolutely huge 10 days ahead for #Safc. If massive improvements aren't made to squad feels like may as well right the season off.

@kev_jackson: Terrible in the first half much better in the second get cattermole and Kirchhoff back with 5 good signings we will be alright #safc

@mrwilldallen: Sunderland dominated until 3rd sub. Watmore going off after mcnair meant loss of possesion in centre. Take the postives

@MPotts1993: Too soon to judge #SAFC. Massive injuries/still 2 weeks left in window. Furious if there's not a serious push for quality signings though.

@KJE_Lowes: Surely Ellis Short needs to realise we HAVE to spend this week and big. Otherwise we can kiss goodbye to this season. Sort it out man! #safc

@PGSmithers: I can't be the only one that thinks we played well and were unlucky to be hit on the break with two very good goals? We dominated imo.
