Parkinson was hit with chants of ‘sacked in the morning’, and the manager is already under huge pressure after only 11 games that have included seven defeats.

Former Sunderland man Michael Gray is fast losing patience, and he suggested replacing Parkinson with a Sunderland legend in Kevin Phillips.

Taking to Twitter, Gray provided his reasoning in calling for the change.

He said: “So don’t tell me about experienced managers no more... get Kev Phillips in... what have we got to lose...! Lampard did ok, Gerrard too.. so why not Kev??? Give the whole place a lift.”

Phillips was hugely popular in his time at the Stadium of Light, scoring over 100 goals in a six-year spell on Wearside.
