MIKAEL MANDRON’S hat-trick helped Sunderland Under-21s complete a superb comeback to win at Manchester City tonight.
In front of the watching Gus Poyet, the Black Cats found themselves 2-1 down at Rochdale’s Spotlands, before battling back to progress to the next round of the U21 Premier League Cup.
City went ahead in the 16th minute through Sinan Bytyqi, but Sunderland pulled level just after the half-hour mark when home stopper Billy O’Brien’s poor clearance was intercepted by George Honeyman, who fed Mandron to blast home.
The hosts regained the lead early in the second half through French midfielder Olivier Ntcham.
But Sunderland equalised just after the hour through Mandron’s low shot from the edge of the area and the striker had a hat-trick six minutes later when he converted from the penalty spot after a foul on Honeyman.
Four minutes after that, Sunderland doubled their advantage after a stunning individual goal from Duncan Watmore.
The U21s will look to maintain that form against Villarreal at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday night, as Sunderland play their first group game in the Premier League International Cup.
