Sunderland reporter Chris Young gives his verdict after the Black Cats slipped to a third defeat on the spin, with a 3-0 loss at Premier League leaders Manchester United.

Costel Pantilimon: Escaped a clanger due to a lack of communication with Kaboul in first half, but made an excellent save to deny Mata. 6

Billy Jones: Was largely solid in dealing with Memphis, but should have done better for second goal. 6

John O’Shea: Plenty of decent interceptions on return to his former club. 7

Younes Kaboul: Beaten too easily by Martial for the second and got away with another one, when Memphis fired straight at Pantilimon. 6

Patrick van Aanholt: Positioning continues to be oh-so haphazard, at fault for goals and should have scored. 5

LEE CATTERMOLE: Looked back-in-the-groove in first start in four, but partially at fault for the opener 7

Yann M’Vila: Decent understanding with Cattermole and some nice passes relieved the pressure. 7

Ola Toivonen: Somehow managed to poke the ball straight at De Gea’s legs from two yards, when he should have got Sunderland back in the game. 6

Adam Johnson: Very rusty, gave the ball away cheaply and taken off at half-time. 5

Jeremain Lens: Familiar tale of a few flashes, yet struggling to live up to that lofty £12.5m transfer fee. 6

Fabio Borini: No service, but handled comfortably by United’s defence. 6

Steven Fletcher (for Johnson 46): Tried to hold the ball up, but offered little support. 6

Seb Larsson (for Toivonen 70): No real attacking impact. 5
