LIVERPOOL goalkeeper Simon Mignolet admits he is saddened to see former club Sunderland propping up the Premier League table.

Mignolet returns to the Stadium of Light on Sunday after joining Liverpool in an £11million deal during the summer.

But after helping the Black Cats successfully stave off the threat of relegation last season, Mignolet now sees his old employers back in the doldrums, with just one point from the opening five games.

“You never want to see your ex-team at the bottom of the league,” said Mignolet, Sunderland’s Player of the Year last season.

“I know a lot of people there and not only in the dressing room. I know a lot of people who work there, a lot of supporters and obviously they deserve better.

“I am sure they will turn it around.”

Kevin Ball will take caretaker charge of Sunderland against Liverpool after last weekend’s dismissal of head coach Paolo Di Canio following a player revolt.

But Mignolet insists he had no problems working under the Italian in their seven games together last season.

“I had a good time working with him,” added the Belgian.

“I have learned a lot from all the managers I have worked under. You always pick things up from coaches.”
