Johnson is set to hold his pre-match press conference this afternoon, while the Wearsiders are also looking to make a few more additions before the end of the transfer window.

The Black Cats head coach has so far added midfielder Carl Winchester to his ranks this month and is now looking to strengthen other areas.

A different attacking option remains high on his wanted list, while an injury to Denver Hume means Sunderland are also in the market for defensive cover.

Johnson reflects on the Plymouth defeat

Johnson said: “It was about the execution and the composure in the final third. We were disappointed with the second goal. We constantly review and evolve."

Inconsistency a problem?

Johnson: “You can change the manager, the tactics or the players - hopefully they won’t change the manager! We are not trying to create a fear culture, we have talked about players being bold and brave. We have scored goals, we have had game were the conversion rate was good and games were it can be better."

Johnson said: “One of the things we have to get to grips with with Luke is his best position for this football club. He is such a good lad, does so much extra work as well. He has been used in so many positions. If we decided he was a right-back, then one problem is he can’t throw a ball at the moment based on the contraction of the nerve. If you’re in a full-back position you need to take throw-ins."

Johnson on Cotterill

Johnson said: “We wish him well, it just shows it can affect fit and healthy people. This is a really tough game for us. They have been on a good, solid run."

What’s the latest on the takeover?

Johnson said: “As you were, it is still positive and pending, nothing I have heard or any conversations would say it won’t happen, I truly believe it will happen.”

“I think we are very strong in terms of what we are trying to do. If we get the new ownership, it takes the course on a different path.

“Internally we are still driving to do everything we can on a short term and long term basis.”

Transfer latest - are Sunderland close to any signings?

Johnson said: “Nothing to say on it. Nothing to inform you of, I think it will hot up now in a number of ways.”
