The Black Cats agreed a short-term contract with the former Rangers and Norwich City striker on Friday evening – as he become Phil Parkinson’s first signing.

But he won’t be able to feature against Wycombe this afternoon after his arrival came after the EFL deadline to register new players.

EFL rules stipulate that all paperwork relating to a transfer must be submitted to and approved by the governing body by “12.00 noon on the day prior to the date of such match” in order for a player to eligible.

That means that Lafferty won’t be available against the Chairboys – and now won’t be able to feature until the trip to MK Dons on Saturday, January 18.

Parkinson is still chasing further attacking reinforcements this month.
