Meaning Sunderland could target players from clubs who need to offload fringe players.

5. Zeki Fryers - Swindon
The 26-year-old has real pedigree having previously turned out for Crystal Palace, Barnsley, Tottenham and Manchester United. Now in League Two, Fryers needs a career resurrecting move. Sunderland could present a huge opportunity.

6. Junior Brown - Coventry City
The 30-year-old played 22 times in League One for Coventry City last season, but, crucially could play as left-wing back in Jack Ross 3-5-2 formation.

7. Lewis Page - Charlton Athletic
23-year-old Page barely featured for Charlton last season but is young, hungry and talented. Lee Bowyer has several defensive options so a loan move away from the Addicks into League One could be on the cards.

8. Andrew Taylor - Bolton
At 32-years-old, Sunderland would represent a big move for Hartlepool-born Taylor. But he does have Premier League and Championship experience and will likely leave Bolton due to their financial woes.
