The Coventry City view on Sunderland's new signings - and what fans should expect from Lee Burge and Jordan Willis
Sunderland have picked up former Coventry City duo Lee Burge and Jordan Willis – but fans could be forgiven for not knowing too much about the pair.
With that in mind, we asked Coventry Telegraph reporter Andy Turner for his take on Jack Ross’ latest additions – and what fans can expect moving forward.
Here’s his take on the duo:
What type of player have Sunderland signed in Lee Burge?
“A very good, hard-working professional who will do his level best to win the shirt and try to establish himself.”
Were the club disappointed to lose Burge this summer or was it time for a fresh start?
“Definitely time for a fresh start. After a mixed season, during which he lacked consistency at times - brilliant one week and prone to the odd costly mistake the next - many fans started to criticise him.
“Manager Mark Robins had already decided he wanted to go down a different route with more ball playing goalkeepers, hence the arrival of Marko Marosi from Doncaster this summer.”
What are Burge's standout attributes, and where does he need some improvement?
“He's a terrific shot stopper.
“Areas of criticism include not commanding his area well enough at times and his kicking, which can be a bit erratic.”
What type of player are Sunderland signing in Willis??
“An athletic and extremely quick defender able to mop up danger from open play. Can also play right-back.”
Were you surprised he didn't seal a move to the Championship?
“He has been linked with several clubs all summer, most notably Luton and Bristol City, so a little bit but I guess the stature of Sunderland he'll see it as only a matter of time before the club gets back to the second tier.”
How disappointed were the club to see Willis depart?
“The manager tried to keep him but understands his situation and he leaves on good terms.
“The fans were disappointed because he's 'one of their own' who has served the club well but it's not like he hasn't been replaced, so I think most will have adjusted to the change quickly.”
What are they key components Willis will bring to the Sunderland side?
“Pace and athleticism.”
