Former Sunderland left-back Kieran Richardson is expected to leave Aston Villa before the end of the transfer window, but he won’t be returning to the Stadium of Light.

Reports this week suggested that Sunderland were ready to make a move to re-sign Richardson in a £2million move from Villa – three years after he brought down the curtain on a Black Cats career which had seen him 134 appearances in red and white.

But the Echo understands that there is no substance to the speculation and Richardson is not a player on Sunderland’s radar during the final fortnight of the transfer window.

Richardson is likely to leave Villa this month with only 12 months remaining on his contract, but the 30-year-old – who left Sunderland because he wanted to play as a midfielder, rather than a left-back – will not provide a solution to the Black Cats’ defensive problems.

Sunderland have shipped seven goals in their opening two games against Leicester and Norwich, with the performance of Patrick van Aanholt, in particular, raising the possibility of reinforcements in the left-back slot.

The Black Cats were on the verge of a £5m move for former loanee Marcos Alonso prior to signing van Aanholt 12 months ago, but the Spaniard looks likely to sign a new contract at Fiorentina, despite speculation linking him with a move to Norwich City earlier this summer.

Dick Advocaat is also in need of reinforcements at the other end of the pitch, where reports in France have continued to link Sunderland with Utrecht’s Sebastien Haller.

The 21-year-old only joined Utrecht on a permanent move from French side Auxerre this summer after a successful loan move, yet Sunderland are thought to have scouted him last weekend.

However, Haller would command a fee in excess of £6m, with Sunderland predominantly looking at loan moves over recent weeks.
