Sunderland fans all over the world were surprised and delighted with the news of Dick Advocaat’s appointment.
Even though Advocaat was only at the helm for nine games he attained a 33% win percentage, the best win percentage of any Sunderland manager in the Premier League.
With a promise of first team quality additions as part of the Dutchman’s demands, the Red and White Army’s followers may now expect a few extra soldiers to be added to the ranks.
It has been reported that Ellis Short was going to allow around £50m to be used to strengthen a frankly aging squad. In comparison to the measly £14m spent last season Sunderland look as if they are heading for a busy window.
Additional positives are timing and trust. Appointing a new head coach so early to end speculation and allow players to prepare for the new season was an absolute must, alongside the added bonus that the Sunderland contingent know exactly what they are getting.
The fans don’t seem to be the only ones delighted with the appointment.
Jermain Defoe spoke of his elation and shock in regards to the appointment, even comparing him to the special one showing the faith that the team has in the veteran.
Overall the Black Cats faithful should be excited for the next few months. Promising signs were shown last season under Advocaat’s reign, and with the assumption that several exciting new faces will be present on the 8th of August, things may finally be going the way of the Sunderland fan.
