One minute before the break, Hugill got his second by closing down the keeper, whose attempt to clear rebounded into the net.

In the second half, the Shrews did pull one back with a header from a corner. It sparked off a bid to come back but the Wearsiders held firm and ran the game down.

Hugill claimed his hat-trick three minutes from time finishing an incisive pass from Dan Neil.

In the final seconds, the home side got a second goal but it was only a consolation and they finished a well-beaten side.

A Sunderland elated coach Paul Bryson said "It was a tremendous display, especially in the first half. The inclusion of Mumba and Neil once again seemed to lift the others and a change to two up front of Hugill and Kiernan worked really well."
