The 24-year-old made his first team return for the Black Cats last weekend in the Checkatrade Trophy, impressing during the 2-0 win over Notts County.

And as the attacker continues to step-up his recovery from a long-term injury, Ross has revealed that Watmore will be in the squad for the FA Cup replay against Walsall.

His inclusion was always the plan, regardless of any involvement last week, and the Sunderland boss believes it will be another good opportunity for Watmore as he aims for more regular first team opportunities.

"Duncan will be back in the squad for the game, and we always planned that even prior to the Checkatrade Trophy match," Ross admitted.

"It was always our intention to have him involved in that game, rest at the weekend, and be back involved for the Walsall match.

"He's in the squad as planned tomorrow and that opportunity to get him on the pitch again will be good for us."

Watmore is continuing to step up his recovery after being sidelined for over a year with cruciate ligament damage in his knee.

And another outing against Walsall will give the speedster a chance to build-up crucial playing time ahead of a busy festive period for the Black Cats.

The striker will be hoping to make his mark as the Black Cats aim to seal progression to the third round of the competition - in a tie which must be decided on the night.

A date with Championship side Bolton Wanderers awaits the winner.
