The 27-year-old is currently on a season-long loan deal at the Stadium of Light, but is expected to see that cut-short in order to head north of the border.

And Ross, who signed the striker for Sunderland in the summer, has admitted he is keen on a reunion with McNulty.

However, he believes the deal could prove complex – especially given the involvement of three clubs in Hibs, the Black Cats and parent club Reading.

“He’s amongst a number of players we’ve been trying explore how the strong the possibility is of getting him here,” said Ross.

"It’s not a particular easy window to do business in because there’s a chain involved in a lot of these deals."
