It is understood that Juan Sartori and Kyril Louis-Dreyfus are continuing to pursue a deal to purchase Sunderland AFC from Stewart Donald – with the deal said to be with the EFL.

Much remains unclear regarding the makeup of the takeover, the division of shares and who will run the club on a day-to-day basis.

However, Armstrong has claimed that Charlie Methven is set to become re-involved at the Stadium of Light following a period of absence.

Sunderland’s co-owner previously courted controversy by labelling fans who streamed matches illegally as ‘parasites’.

Here's how Black Cats fans reacted to Armstrong’s takeover claims – simply scroll down to take a look:

@KevinBridges82: “This would be an absolute disaster. Methven has repeatedly belittled and insulted fans and people from the north east in general. He cannot be part of the clubs future.”

@gav_gavnewman: “It all sounds horrible! They have been told they’re not wanted bu the fans, they said they’d leave if we asked them too! So why are they hanging on!”

On Facebook, Damien Taylor said: “I can see fans staying away if Methven is still involved.”

Danny Hill added: “What will happen is supporters will vote with there feet just like they did with Ellis short in the end... they'll stop buying tickets and stop buying from the club shop till they have gone.”

@JohnnyR1Red explained: “It would be a disaster if Methven runs the club, that is worrying.”
