Sunderland have been handed an injury boost ahead of the Wear-Tyne derby with the return to training of Swedish midfielder Ola Toivonen.
Summer signing Toivonen recently sustained a groin problem after coming off the bench to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic during Sweden’s Euro 2016 qualifying win over Moldova and subsequently missed the 1-0 defeat at West Brom.
But Toivonen has confirmed he is back in training ahead of Sunday’s game at the Stadium of Light.
And he could be set for an instant return to the first team for the visit of Steve McClaren’s Newcastle side.
The Swede tweeted: “Getting ready for the big game Sunday.”
Prior to the West Brom defeat Toivonen had started each of Sunderland’s previous five games.
