A GoFundMe page, started by supporters’ website Roker Report, encouraged people to donate ahead of the festive season – with an initial target of £2,000 set, to be split between Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen and the Sunderland Foodbank.
But that target was quickly surpassed, with Sunderland fans coming out in their droves to donate to the worthy cause.

In addition to the stunning figure raised by the fans, Watmore and his family have donated an additional £1,000 to the soup kitchen as they bid to do their bit over the Christmas period.
Confirming their stunning gesture, a tweet from Roker Report said: “Thank you to the Watmore family, who have donated £1000 which will go straight to the Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen rather than to our GoFundMe page.
“What a superb gesture. This money will change lives.”
Sunderland Foodbank also offered their thanks to supporters, while admitting they were ‘blown away’ by the level of donations.
