The Black Cats strolled into a three-goal lead at the interval thanks to a Grant Leadbitter penalty, a well-taken Charlie Wyke effort, and an impressive first senior strike from youngster Jack Diamond.

The 20-year-old had already won the spot-kick for his side’s opener, and his positivity was a constant threat to the Imps throughout.

Wyke added a fourth after the break.

This afternoon's result was Sunderland's biggest away triumph in a decade, and ended a run of five League One outings without a win.

Johnson's men are now up to eighth in the table – two points off the play-off places, and five off the automatic promotion spots.

Saturday's display made for a marked increase in attacking intent from the Black Cats, and represented a considerable departure from the conservatism that came to characterise the latter stages of Phil Parkinson tenure in the dugout.

Next up, Sunderland host mid-table AFC Wimbledon at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday evening.
