The unnamed target is set to join from a Premier League club and if registered before Friday lunchtime could feature at the Stadium of Light.

Hull will, however, be without several players with James Scott, Josh Magennis, Lewie Coyle, Callum Elder and Leo da Silva all missing the behind-closed-doors game.

Hull could hand debuts to Greg Docherty and Josh Emmanuel.

Boss Grant McCann revealed he is closing in on a new signing: “He’s coming from a Premier League club and there were a few clubs after him so we’re really happy to have him on board.”

McCann added: “We’ll be missing Callum Elder this weekend.

“Magennis & Scott are on internationals, Lewie Coyle is suspended and Leo Da Silva is about 2 or 3 weeks behind everyone as he’s been off ill.”
