The Black Cats evidently altered their transfer approach to try and sign younger assets from higher-league clubs, rather than players who have experience at League One level.
Many of Sunderland’s new arrivals have impressed, while others have had to wait for their opportunities in the Carabao Cup and Papa John’s Trophy.
Eight of the Black Cats’ additions were under the age of 24, with new captain Corry Evans and Alex Pritchard the only exceptions.
Both Evans and Pritchard have encountered fitness setbacks since their moves to Wearside, while other players such as Manchester City loanee Callum Doyle, 18, and Dennis Cirkin, 19, have become first-team regulars.
We’ve taken a closer look at how each one of Sunderland’s summer signings has fared and given them a grade based on their performances and contributions so far.

Clearly the West Ham loanee would have liked more game time and is yet to start a league match for Sunderland. Following a nervy start on his debut at Blackpool, The 21-year-old has looked more assured at the back in cup competitions.

It's a real shame the striker, on loan from Everton, picked up a hamstring injury following a man of the match against Cheltenham. Broadhead had to be patient for his first-team opportunity but has looked sharp when he’s had the chance.

Another player who has had to wait patiently for his chance. The versatile full-back gave a good account of himself in the cup game at Wigan and win over Cheltenham, but will be keen to gain more game time following his arrival from Leeds.

The German enjoyed an impressive cameo off the bench, which included his first goal for the club, in the 5-0 win over Cheltenham. His only league start came in the 4-0 hammering at Portsmouth when he wasn't able to showcase his ability. It does look like he can give Sunderland's attack another dimension though.
