And Accrington boss John Coleman is sure to have his team fired up for this one if his pre-match presser is anything to go by.
He said: “One the day, it’s 11 v 11. They might have a nicer stadium, the pitch might be a little bit better, their infrastructure might be better, they might eat better meals than us after training and their players might drive nicer cars but that doesn’t guarantee you more points on a Saturday, it doesn’t guarantee you winning your own individual battles.

“We are playing 11 players not a club or a stand or fans, it’s not an insurmountable mission. We have been to the Stadium of Light twice and not lost and on both occasions we have come away a bit deflated we hadn’t won so we will be going there to win.
Here, though, we’ll take you through everything you need to know before, during and after the game… including LIVE updates from the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland 1-1 Accrington Stanley LIVE
Key Events
- Sunderland face Accrington Stanley at the Stadium of Light this afternoon
- Lee Johnson faces a selection dilemma in goal with three first team keepers on the books
- Anthony Patterson, Lee Burge and Ron-Thorben Hoffmann are all in contention to start
21 - Sunderland the better side
Sunderland are by far the better side and are pushing for a second after Neil’s long-ranged effort. Accrington could still pose a threat on the counter attack, however.
McGeady has looked dangerous on the right and has often cut inside to great effect.
11 - Stewart to McGeady
Ross Stewart flicks the ball onto McGeady again down the right hand side of Sunderland’s attack but nothing comes of it. CHANCE! Neil clips a lovely ball into Gooch who heads over the bar. MASSIVE MASSIVE chance for Sunderland!
Luke O’Nien gives away a foul. Halfway inside Sunderland’s half. Accy will look to swing it in. It comes out to the edge of the area but Accrington’s shit is wide of Hoffmann’s post.
6 - Penalty shout
Sunderland appeal for a penalty for a foul on Stewart, didn’t look to be much in it. Embleton then has a shot blocked. Sunderland have started brightly here but there’s space for Accrington on the counter.
Stewart sets Gooch off down the left. The ball comes back to Stewart who looks like he has to score but the shot is blocked! SO CLOSE!
4 - Unlucky
Dan Neil swings the ball out to the right hand side again but it’s headed away. Sunderland appear to be looking for McGeady in the opening five mins.
And he wins a corner!
3 - Chance!
Decent play by Stewart to win the ball in the middles, he gets it out wide but McGeady’s cross is straight into the hands of the goalkeeper.
1 - We’re underway
And we’re underway at the Stadium of Light with the Roker End in fine voice. Former Sunderland bosses John Fickling and Bob Murray are in the stands.
Accrington start with an attack down Sunderland’s right-hand side but it comes to nothing.
And the Sunderland team is out - Hoffmann starts in goal!
One change from the Wycombe Wanderers game... Hoffmann in for Patterson.
