The 34-year-old has signed a two-year-deal and will add some experience and physicality to Jack Ross' defence.

The Dutchman, who made over 100 league appearances for Sheffield Wednesday before being released earlier this summer, is pleased to have been able to commit well before the season begins.

He told safc.com: "I’m very pleased. Sunderland is a big club with great support so I can’t wait to get started.

"They phoned me a couple of weeks ago through my agent, we’ve been working on it ever since then. I’ve been on holiday in Italy and got the final phone call yesterday, I got on a plane so now I’m here.

"I’ve been training on my own, which is not the best thing for pre-season so I can’t wait to get on the pitch and get involved."

Jack Ross will be eager to add at least one more defender to his ranks, with Loovens set to compete for a place with Alim Ozturk and Tom Flanagan.

Having played at the Stadium of Light before, Loovens is keen to sample the superb facilities and the loyal support.

He said: "He [Ross] just came to say hello and showed me around the place. Of course I want to play a part for the club and his team.

"I’ve got lost already twice! The place looks really nice, I can’t get wait to started and get in the team, get as fit as possible.

"I’ve played here before so I know the support is amazing. The more, the merrier."
