New signing Emanuele Giaccherini made his first appearance in a Sunderland shirt tonight as the Black Cats beat Swiss side FC Chiasso in a training ground game.

Giaccherini played 74 minutes in a wide midfield role after completing his £6.5million move from Juventus on Tuesday.

He was one of seven new signings that featured for Sunderland at the end of their Italian training camp.

Half-time substitute Connor Wickham grabbed the only goal of the game when he tucked home Jack Colback’s cross from eight yards out.

Paolo Di Canio’s side will return to Wearside tomorrow before heading out to the Barclays Asia Trophy, in Hong Kong on Saturday.
