The England Under-21 international may have picked the ball out of the net four times but he wasn't at fault for any of the goals and made a string of impressive saves.

Pundits were lining up to praise Pickford, who has spent time on loan at Preston North End this season.

Phil Thompson on Sky Sports said: "We all talk about ‘keepers who are shot stoppers or somebody is good in the air but not a good shot stopper, but this boy does everything good. He is going to be an absolute star."

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said: "We had a lot of shots on target – their goalkeeper was fantastic."

Meanwhile, impressed Black Cats boss Sam Allardyce added: "The experience he has gained on loan has helped him out a tremendous amount.

"He looks comfortable at this age. It’s a bright future for us and for him."
