First clean sheet small comfort for Sunderland’s win wait, says Mannone

VITO MANNONE admits a first clean sheet of the campaign was only scant consolation for Sunderland after spurning a golden opportunity to break their duck.

The Black Cats recorded a first shut-out in the Premier League this season in yesterday’s stalemate at Burnley, to take their tally of draws this season to four from five games.

But with the newly-promoted Clarets still searching for their first goal since the opening weekend, goalkeeper Mannone was left ruing a blown opportunity to record a maiden top flight victory.

Mannone said: “We went close a few times but they did as well so it was very equal. We gave everything.

“The most important thing is a first clean sheet so we are happy about that.

“But obviously we want to win these games so that’s the only disappointment – to go home without the three points.”

Despite the absence of a first victory, Mannone believes Sunderland have made a solid start to the season after tasting defeat just once so far.

But the Italian concedes improvement is needed for the Black Cats to move up the table, with Gus Poyet’s side now facing three back-to-back encounters at the Stadium of Light - starting with Tuesday’s Capital One Cup third round clash against Stoke.

Mannone added: “As a Premier League player, you need to adapt to every game. Going to Turf Moor is difficult and no-one will go away from there with an easy game. We knew that.

“We played a top club last Saturday (Spurs) when we got a good point but in this one we were looking for the three.

“We know our road. We know where we are heading to and we just need to improve game by game. Obviously we want that first win but I don’t think we have started badly.”
