Fernandinho excited by Manchester City-Sunderland final

MANCHESTER City midfielder Fernandinho is relishing every step in what promises to be a dream season.

Little has gone wrong for the Brazilian since he joined City in a £30million deal from Shakhtar Donetsk last summer.

The 28-year-old has established himself as a central force at the heart of the club’s drive for success on multiple fronts.

His form has also earned him a recall to his national squad and he now has the chance to secure a place ahead of this summer’s World Cup in his homeland.

But before he links up with Luiz Felipe Scolari’s men for a friendly against South Africa next week, tomorrow’s Capital One Cup final against Sunderland at Wembley beckons.

Fernandinho said: “It is important for players to win titles, and we have a chance to win a new title, so I am very excited about this final.

“For me it is very important. I have individual targets.

“If you play a final it is very important for your career. You have to be ready to play a good match.”

Fernandinho has never played at Wembley and that is an extra factor that motivates him.

He said: “Maybe it can be the same as the Maracana in Brazil.

“It is a special stadium. There is a lot of history there, a lot of teams have won titles there.

“It is a special moment in my career and I want to enjoy this moment.

“We are playing against a difficult team, a very good team, but our team is prepared well to play good and to try to win this game.”

Fernandinho has just five international caps having largely been overlooked by Brazil during his eight years in Donetsk.

As well as having a chance to win trophies, he hoped the move to City could improve his profile ahead of the World Cup and the decision looks to be paying off.

Fernandinho, who waived £4million in bonuses to facilitate the City switch, said: “For me it is an honour to be called for the Brazil national squad.

“It is the last game before the final (squad) sheet for the World Cup.

“It will be very important for me and I hope I can be prepared for this game and can await the final sheet in May.”
