Sunderland were tonight paired with Arsenal in their opening tie of the FA Cup – just 48 hours after losing to the Gunners.

Sam Allardyce’s side will meet the holders in the third round on the weekend of January 8-11.

Given Arsene Wenger’s team are the defending champions, it is likely to be one of the TV fixtures that weekend.

Sunderland will relish the contest after performing so well at the Emirates on Saturday.

Mesut Ozil set up Joel Campbell to put Arsenal ahead before Olivier Giroud’s OG put Sunderland level.

Giroud made amends with a header to regain the lead but the Black Cats had their chances before Aaron Ramsey scrambled a late third for the hosts.

Sunderland reached the fifth round last season, Gus Poyet’s side winning against Championship opposition, Leeds (1-0) and Fulham (3-1) before being dumped out by cup giant killers Bradford City 2-0 at Valley Parade.

Elsewhere, arch-rivals Newcastle United were also given an all-Premier League tie, at Watford.

Middlesbrough have a home tie against fellow Championship promotion hopefuls Burnley.

Hartlepool United, in the third round for the first time in six years. will host Championship high fliers Derby County if they get past Salford City in their third-round replay.
