The winger is free to leave having fallen out of favour under Phil Parkinson, and the closure of the international transfer window has closed a number of doors.

But there are several that remain open:

THE EFL

The options still open to Sunderland outcast Aiden McGeady

It’s important to remember that deals - both permanent and temporary - can still be completed between EFL clubs up until October 16.

McGeady, therefore, still has the option of remaining in the English league system should such an opportunity arrive.

Whether that happens remains to be seen.

EUROPE

While the majority of Europe saw their transfer windows close on October 5, there remain a handful of nations who are still allowed to trade until later in the month.

The window in Portugal - whose trading period tends to run longer than most other nations - is open until October 25.

But other windows that remained open slightly longer than the October 5 deadline – such as the Netherlands and Portugal – have now closed.

NORTH AMERICA

A move to the MLS has been touted in the past as a potential option for McGeady and, with a number of clubs still having international player spots on their rosters, it could prove an option.

The window in the USA - and indeed in Canada - remains open until October 29.

INDIA

There’s a whole host of English players heading out to India, with the country’s elite splashing the cash on overseas talent.

This week alone we’ve seen Gary Hooper and Danny Fox head out to India - so could McGeady follow in their footsteps?

Clubs in the Indian Super League - where Martin Bain is the CEO of the league’s organisers - have until October 20 to complete their summer business.

AUSTRALIA

There’s been a host of high-profile departures from Australia in recent months, with clubs now looking to bolster their ranks.

The window down under doesn’t open until November 17, but A-League clubs could well look to the EFL for some potential recruits.
