N'Zogbia trained with Sunderland in the summer after being left as a free agent following his departure from Aston Villa.

The former Newcastle winger played a couple of friendlies for the Black Cats, scoring against Rotherham, but after his former Magpies manager Sam Allardyce left the club, new boss David Moyes decided not to offer him a contract.

N'Zogbia was all set to sign for Nantes this week after a trial period there, but according to Ouest France, the move is off after doctors confirmed that the heart complication picked up in an initial medical earlier this week is too severe for Les Canaris to be able to sign the player without significant risk attached to the player’s present and future health.

It has led to speculation in France that the 30-year-old midfielder will have to retire from football.

N’Zogbia joined Newcastle United in 2004 and left for Wigan Athletic after five years. He eventually headed to Aston Villa in 2011.
