And the goalkeeper's heroics have benefits for his former club, too - with the win over the Swedes handing Sunderland an extra £50,000.

The Echo reported last week that Sunderland were set for a payout of just over £600,000 thanks to FIFA's World Cup Club Benefits Programme - a scheme designed to reward clubs for their players' participation in the tournament.

Clubs are paid a set fee of $8,350 per player, per day during their involvement in the World Cup – which works out at just shy of £6,500.

Payments begin 14 days before the opening ceremony and end on the day immediately following a team’s elimination from the tournament.

The Black Cats have already pocketed over £350,000 thanks to the involvement of current players Wahbi Khazri and Bryan Oviedo - a welcome budget boost for new owner Stewart Donald.

Such a figure is then added to by some of Sunderland's former players, for whom the Black Cats receive a third of their payout.

That has seen five-figure fees secured thanks to the involvement of Uruguay's Sebastian Coates and Sweden's Seb Larsson.

But it's Pickford who continues to reel in the cash for the Wearsiders - with England now guaranteed to be playing in the final weekend of the tournament after their progression.
