Echo Jury: Jack Shields is ecstatic with Sunderland’s capture of Johnson and Fletcher

Have your say

AN almost perfect week was spoiled by the British weather on Saturday. Who would have thought matches to be called off in August?

However the two signings Sunderland made were enough to keep spirits high.

Steven Fletcher was on our radar for months – his direct and physical style of play not seen in our team since the days of Kenwyne Jones.

Aerially, he seems to dominate a lot of defenders and, most important of all, he scores goals. The fact that he has been top scorer and in double figures for struggling sides like Burnley and Wolves only enhances his reputation further.

If he does that in poor teams then he must have something. the price may be slightly over the top, but no one will be complaining if he gets between 12 and 15 goals this season.

In Adam Johnson, we have one of the best wingers in the Premier League. He is quick with very fast feet, but he is direct and delivers good crosses into the box.

Too many modern-day wingers try to be too complicated, but Johnson is a throwback to the old style of winger. He really is a quality player and one that will excite the fans, like McClean on the opposite side.

The quality of players we are signing gets better every season, and surely we are set for a successful season with these two new acquisitions.
