SUNDERLAND have confirmed that winger Charis Mavrias has returned to Panathinaikos on loan until the end of the season.
The Echo reported over the weekend how Mavrias was set to return to his homeland to gain regular first-team football after not featuring for Sunderland in a year.
Mavrias was watched by scouts from Celtic - along with three representatives from the Championship - last week, but that interest didn’t materialise into a concrete switch.
However, Panathinaikos, who have been attempting to re-sign Mavrias throughout this season have managed to persuade the 20-year-old to return to Greece, despite a more lucrative offer from elsewhere.
Mavrias arrived at the Stadium of Light in a £2million deal 18 months ago after being signed by ex-director of football Roberto Di Fanti.
But the Greek international has made just four first-team appearances for Sunderland and despite impressing in pre-season, still hasn’t featured in the Premier League under Gus Poyet.
