The Black Cats lost their final game before the campaign was suspended as they dropped to seventh in the third tier, albeit only three points behind second place Rotherham United.

It remains unclear when football will resume, with the EFL having suspended all League One fixtures indefinitely, while clubs have been advised not to resume training until May 16 at the earliest.

But when the season does kick-off again, Sunderland’s sights will be firmly set on a return to the Championship.

And Hume insists that the side will not be giving up on their goal of automatic promotion just yet, and is confident that eight wins from their eight remaining games will prove enough.

“We’re still aiming for the top two,” said the wing-back.

“I think everyone knows that’s the aim. There’s eight games left and if we win each game I think we’ll go up.

“That’s the attitude we’ve got to have and we’ll see where it takes us.

“Since the start of the season that’s been the aim,” he continued.

“So we’ve just got to keep on taking each game as it comes, with the right mindset, and trying to win every game.

“I think if we do that, we’ll end up where we want to be.”

Hume is keen to play his part in a promotion push, especially given the faith placed in him by Phil Parkinson since his arrival on Wearside.

The academy graduate has been a near ever-present since the 52-year-old stepped into the dugout at the Stadium of Light, with more experienced options - firstly Laurens De Bock and latterly Declan John - left out the side.

Parkinson’s faith in the youngster hasn’t wavered, despite some dips in form, and it’s for that vote of confidence that Hume is thankful.

“I’ve really enjoyed it since the gaffer’s came in and I’ve played pretty much every game so I’ve thoroughly enjoyed that run of games,” he added.

“I’m just working to keep improving and taking each game as it comes. We’ll then see where that takes me at the end of the season.

“The gaffer has been first class with me since he came in. He’s put a lot of confidence in me; put a lot of trust in me, and I think that’s probably shown in my performances as well.”

“I’m really enjoying it,” he continued.

“I’ve played a lot of games this season. Obviously each game is different and as a team and individually you have different runs in the team - when you’re feeling good, or when you feel not so good.

“But I think the main thing is to keep building on the performances and keep on getting them positive results.”
